Sembrando Salud
(sowing the seeds of health) was a community-based tobacco and alcohol
use prevention program that targeted nearly 700 high-risk migrant adolescents
(ages 11-16) who typically are not exposed to cancer prevention programs.
The study, which was conducted in San Diego County, was a randomized controlled
trial with the treatment group receiving the tobacco/alcohol use prevention
program and the attention-control group receiving a first aid/safety program.
The tobacco/alcohol use prevention program included the three minimum components
identified by NCI for tobacco use prevention, as well as involvement of the
parents in the intervention. Social skills development (e.g., refusal skills and norm setting)
was taught through the implementation of series of 8 weekly classes taught by
undergraduate bilingual/bicultural students to groups of approximately 10 families.
Measurement emphasized the use of (and susceptibility to use) tobacco and alcohol
at post-intervention and at one and two year follow-up periods.
