Dr. Mayer received her doctoral degree in
clinical psychology in 1984 from Virginia Tech and completed a postdoctoral
research fellowship from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
The theme of her research has been the development and evaluation of low-cost,
community-based health promotion programs with high potential for dissemination.
Dr. Mayer also has developed and validated objective measurement strategies to remedy
some of the weaknesses inherent in self-report measures. Her main research areas have
been breast cancer screening adherence, healthy food choice behavior, and most recently,
skin cancer prevention/sun safety behaviors. Dr. Mayer currently is principal investigator
of a randomized controlled sun safety trial with Southern California U.S. Postal Service letter
carriers. She has received research grants from the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute
for Arthritis and Muskuloskeletal and Skin Diseases, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
and the U.S. Army Breast Cancer Research Program. In 2002 she was awarded the Pro-Change Research
to Practice Dissemination Award from the Society of Behavioral Medicine.
